There’s a lot of demand right now for good storyboard artists in the Middle East and Dubai especially. Dubai has positioned itself as a leading hub for professionals in the region and most of the major creative advertising activity takes place here in Media City.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work on campaigns for some of the world’s major brands, including:

Burj Al Arab, Coca-Cola, Conrad Hotels, Etisalat, Emirates Airlines, GMC, Heinz, Invest AD, Kinder, Manchester United, McDonald’s, Mobily, Pacific Royale Airways, Samsung, Sharp, Subaru, Volkswagon and the UAE World Expo Pavilion.

The purpose of a storyboard artist is to translate the concept into images and take the idea one step closer to production. Usually the artwork doesn’t need to be a masterpiece, though clear and professional enough to transmit an idea clearly, often amongst many key stakeholders. “Easy!” I hear you say – perhaps but storyboarding requires an understanding of the production process, excellent comprehension and communication skills and perhaps most importantly the ability to deliver to extremely tight deadlines. Whether it’s an advertising agency that needs to get it’s pitch out before it’s competitors or an inflight safety video that needs to be delivered yesterday, you can guarantee there won’t be time to hang around.

Having said that being a freelance storyboard artist is thoroughly rewarding as it’s probably the area that requires more drawings per day than any other field. If you can take the heat it can be really good fun.

The examples on the right are a random mix of some of the storyboards I’ve worked on. As you can see, some are more graphical and are being used as a basis for animation; the others are involve people and expressions and some are made up entities! The thing they all have in common is that they have been produced to extremely tight deadlines and I’m proud to say that on the whole, I got it right first time!

I’ll be regularly updating my sketchbook with storyboards and other illustrations so please don’t forget to check it from time to time. If you need some storyboard work carried out, please get in touch and I’ll be sure to get back to you right away.
