This is a pen and ink and water colour illustration I produced for Gallery One. They’ve just opened a new gallery in the Atlantis hotel on the Palm island here in Dubai and wanted an image for a poster with their new location as the focal point. For me, what made the prospect of working on this piece especially interesting is that it’s from the point of view of the sea, looking back across the Palm towards the coast and skyline of Dubai. I was given a rough idea of layout, a folder full of reference images and then basically let loose to do my thing. I had so much fun working on this illustration, it was great to get back to painting and drawing by hand having been drawing pretty much everything digitally for the last year or so. The challenge of having to get it right first time, with no ‘undo’ button to fall back on, only made the task more exciting. Once I got going everything seemed to fall into place and I’m really pleased with the finished picture. An added bonus of working on this illustration is that I feel I know Dubai, the city I’m calling home at the moment, a little bit better than I did before. I’d love to do some more of these sorts of illustrations in the future, hopefully it won’t be too long before I get the chance!
